It looks like a simple device used for paddling. But your knowledge of paddles and subsequent purchase decision, can make a vast difference in your overall performance as a professional kayaker or even a recreational one, for that matter. When you’re out on choppy waters, all on your own, the only things you can count on, is your paddle and your life jacket to take you through the toughest of times.
How to get the right paddle?
Going ahead, we’re going to be talking about so many things pertaining to paddles, and their purchasing criteria to be specific. But always remember, the first thing that needs to be kept in mind while making your buying choice is fairly simple. It has to do with the size of your hands. Pardon me? Yes, that’s right. The ideal length and width of your paddle is actually dependent upon the size of your hands and overall build. So basically the diameter shaft of any branded paddle comes in three varied sizes- small, medium and large. Now based on the size of your hands as well as shoulders, you can go ahead and chose whichever paddle diameter is suited for you.
Picking the appropriate length
Similarly, the length of the paddle you should opt for, needs to be directly proportional to your height. So if you are over 6 feet tall, you definitely need to purchase a long paddle, if you are anywhere between 5 feet and 4 inches up till 6 feet tall, please opt for a medium-length paddle, and in case you happen to be shorter than 5 feet 4 inches, you will find it easiest to use a short paddle. Just in case you are curious, you can still go ahead and buy a paddle of your choice without sticking to the thumb rules as mentioned above. But what will end up happening is that your paddling efficiency will not be as good as you want it to. In case your paddling frequency is high or if you are a professional kayaker, you might end up either wearing yourself out completely, or wearing out the paddle instead whilst wasting your efforts.
